A Firewall-Friendly FTPS Solution

Network security experts agree that Passive mode is far more secure than Active mode for doing secure FTP over SSL (FTPS) file transfers. While most so-called ‘secure’ FTP servers support Passive mode, many do so by requiring you to open some 64,000 ports on your firewall.

MOVEit ® DMZ server by Standard Networks has a better solution.

MOVEit DMZ enables you to do Passive mode file transfers with as few as 4 open firewall ports. For additional security you can also have MOVEit DMZ require that all FTPS transfers use Passive mode.

Because MOVEit DMZ was designed from the ground up to be a secure solution, it includes capabilities that other secure FTP servers lack.

  • Encrypted Storage that protects the contents of every file, even if the security of the underlying operating system is compromised. This protection is provided by MOVEit DMZ's exclusive, built-in FIPS 140-2 validated 256-bit AES encryption.
  • End-to-End Encryption through MOVEit DMZ's support for public key encrypted transfer clients and its encrypted storage. This eliminates the need for the expense and key management requirements of third-party encryption programs like PGP.
  • Virtual Interface that shows each individual user only those specific users, files, folders, log information and commands they have been granted permission for.
  • SFTP (SSH) Support that is built into the product (not an extra-cost, do-it-yourself add-on). This makes it easy for MOVEit DMZ to securely exchange files with the many UNIX and Linux systems that run these clients.
  • Web Browser Support so users can securely exchange files via firewall-friendly HTTPS using their existing Firefox, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera and Safari browsers.

MOVEit DMZ also provides all of the following advanced capabilities.

  • File non-repudiation
  • Guaranteed delivery
  • Email notification of file arrivals
  • Multi-lingual user interface
  • High availability

"Having to open 64,000 ports to support Passive mode file transfers pretty much defeats the purpose of having a firewall."
